le Meridien Pyramids

5 Star

Opinion

An adequate upmarket but rather charmless option which offers a varied selection of eating venues and is within walking distance of the pyramids (which are visible from the grounds and some of the rooms). Popular with tour groups and the conference crowd. Offers a club floor with its own private lounge. A 4-star rating would be more appropriate.

Exterior

A drab brown stepped 6-storey block adjoining a 2-storey main building and single storey cabanas around the pool area.

Property type: Hotel

Storeys: 6

Interior

An unremarkable interior with pretensions of grandeur but looking dated; a long granite-floored reception area faces a small coffee shop; a 2-storey atrium is set around a brass-railed staircase beyond which is a bar area and a pleasant airy buffet restaurant overlooking the pool. Other facilities include a cheerful Tex Mex eatery, an informal eatery with a Mediterranean menu and a small shopping arcade.

Rooms: 546

Grounds

The compact but attractive pool area has bridges and a swim-up bar; it is bordered by small lawns and has views of one of the pyramids. An inviting sheesha café, and an appealing Nubian-village restaurant with an open air terrace facing the pyramids are around edges.

Location

Area Type: In the suburb of Giza beside a busy traffic-heavy dual-carriageway with a few similar hotels in the vicinity but no real amenities. Pyramids ¾ ml. Downtown 7 mls.
